How can we get students out of the classroom and working towards being proactive members in the community?
APPLE'S CHALLENGE-BASED LEARNING
John Lennon once stated, “Think Globally, Act Locally!” Imagine a class where this philosophy becomes a reality for your students. Instead of just reading about local erosion issues at Folly Beach or the diminishment of the bluefin tuna population, students become immersed in finding and implementing possible pieces to the solution. They collaborate with one another to research the issue; they interview local scientists to find realistic solutions to the problem; they travel to the site of the problem to gain familiarity with the problem they are facing; but more importantly, they become activists for change in our community.
Challenge Based Learning is an engaging and hands-on approach to learning that encourages students to use resources and research to solve real-world problems within their communities. Student collaboration with peers, teachers, subject-matter experts, community members, and even globally is key; and within CBL, students are prompted to ask good questions, develop deep subject area knowledge, identify and solve challenges, take action, and share their experience.
