How can we monitor progress of unpacked standards?
A CAPACITY MATRIX
What is a capacity matrix?
The capacity matrix is a self-assessment tool that helps students assess their own skills and knowledge as they develop competency in a given standard. The capacity matrix is an ongoing assessment tool that allows students to set goals to further their own learning of a standard and record their learning as they progress. This allows the student and teacher to clearly document and monitor the progress they are making.
In order to construct an effective capacity matrix for a particular Common Core standard, the teacher needs to:
Tips to Keep in Mind with Capacity Matrices
In order to construct an effective capacity matrix for a particular Common Core standard, the teacher needs to:
- Look at the class's unpacked standard.
- From the unpacked standard, the teacher needs to list the specific skills a student needs to know and do in order to show mastery of that standard.
- After the list is complete, the teacher breaks down the competency levels for that said skill. (Example of basic levels would be: "I've heard of this;" "I can do this with help;" I can do this on my own all the time;" "I can teach this to others.")
- Then, the teacher reflects and devises ways the students can show mastery of the said standard.
Tips to Keep in Mind with Capacity Matrices
- Students will keep track of their learning by filling in the correct competency level. Each student should keep the matrix and reflect on their progress regularly in order to keep an accurate record of their learning.
- In order for the capacity matrix to be effective, a teacher will need to model and scaffold students towards individually assessing their own abilities.
- Students may need to understand their learning could be at a different competency level than other students. As a teacher, it is essential you create an environment that fosters honest feedback and support.
- The capacity matrix will not work if students are not honest in their assessment of their own knowledge. Remember the follow-up to competency in a capacity matrix is a rigorous, teacher-created assessment before students progress. This will be your check of whether or not students are being honest in the capacity matrix.
- The capacity matrix is not meant to be used for every standard or sub-strand of the standard. They are an assessment tool to be used alongside other tools mentioned in the class's syllabus.
